We’re new to Portland and we have a 16 year old who’s always taken art classes and learned as much as she could about different media.

Currently she’s taking evening college classes (doing the high school/associate degree program), but today she said she really misses working creatively on an ongoing basis. She’s particularly interested in ceramics right now, but is open to just about any medium.

When we moved, we left behind the corporate world and also a steady income. So, as we build up our own business here, our funds are very limited and it’s hard to find an affordable outlet for her creativity.

Do you know of any local artists to take on students to help in the studio in exchange for learning their trade, having time to produce their own work in the studio after helping out? We’re located in the SE area of Portland, but she is getting very used to the bus system and can travel to studios.

Are you in Portland (Oregon)? If so, there are lots of places where you can look for classes. For starters, check out Multnomah Arts Center (in Multnomah Village), Print Arts Northwest (located in the Pearl District), the studio school at Oregon College of Art and Craft (www.ocac.edu). Shu-Ju Wang, one of the Portland Open Studios artists, is teaching a printmaking class at OCAC in August. Check out this entry in this blog for some brief descriptions.
